The hostility I felt in the air, an awareness that something truly evil was out there, intimidated me, and I wasn’t about to play nice with them.  
First there was a snap, crunch, pop, then an explosion of similar sounds on all sides. I forced a deep, slow breath, willing the fire to my awaiting hands. Pools of orange and red heat filled up my palms in slick, gooey balls. At once, a horde of people wearing tattered clothes charged from every direction. A quick observation of their dirty faces confirmed they weren’t human as they stared blankly ahead, ghostly white eyes and foam spilling out of their open mouths as they growled and moaned. “Now!” Tristan yelled. And that was all we needed to take action. I thrust out my hands, shooting multiple lava balls at the three walking dead directly in front of me. They screeched and wailed before completely disintegrating into dark gray puddles of thick, molten earth.
I flashed around, briefly catching sight of Tristan swinging his outstretched hand as if it were a blade and slicing the heads off two of those things with his fingers. “Oh my go…” I mumbled through a gasp, then flung four more lava balls at the beasties closing in on me. After a few short seconds they met the same fate as the last ones, and I sprung up, spiraling in the air, then landed my heel in the chest of another attacker. It fell back, arms flailing and legs fighting to regain balance. I studied it a moment, taken aback by its messy dark hair spilling in matted clumps around its human-looking face. Once a woman close my age, but now some kind of monster with dirt caked across her forehead and grimy foam mixed with blood spilling out of her open mouth. Recovering its balance, it gave a low, threatening growl before lunging at me. I jumped up and kicked, my boot crushing its nose, then swung out my back fist as I landed and cracked my knuckles against cheekbone. It released an agonizing moan garbled by the blood and fluids in its mouth, then spit a mouthful of milky pink liquid that landed on the ground a few inches from my boot. Smoke rose as the saliva tore through the weeds on the ground. Silencing my surprise, I blasted the monster with my fire and it disintegrated seconds after impact. I glanced back down and saw a crater in the ground about a half-foot deep and the same in width. 
Wondering about what I’d just seen, I surveyed my surroundings. There were only a few of those creature-things left. Tristan was battling two of them, still using his arm as a sword. And Stone was fighting one of them combat style, since he didn’t seem to be quite fast enough to rip off the darn thing’s head. I closed my eyes, summoning my fire to the three remaining beasties. I’d never done that before, but I had a sixth sense that it would work nonetheless. So I dug deep inside, directing the heat and sending it outward. I could feel my heart pounding in my ears, feel it jiggling the sweat pooled at my nape. My whole body shuddered with swirling currents of charged heat, prickling my skin like flaming ice as I pushed all my power to the remaining creatures. Eerie moments passed, but I dared not open my eyes for fear of losing my concentration.

Skylar's eyes filled with a flickering blue light as ghostly flames jetted from her palms, and her screams were lost over the roaring of the blaze. Instinctively, she shook her hands, slapped them against her legs, and then clapped them together to try and extinguish the fire. As her hands touched, the flames vanished. To her astonishment her skin wasn't burned. It wasn't even warm. Sadly, the same couldn't be said for Buster. The dog was a smoking ruin at her feet, one more pile of burnt remains in a world already covered in ash. Her heart broke as she stared down at him. Oh god, she thought. What's happened? What have I done?
"Oh my Lord, girl," a man said behind her. "What did you do?"
Skylar whirled around, her eyes widening in guilt even though she didn't understand what had happened, or how. "Henry, he jumped at me! I don't know why he did it, and I tried to stop him, but..." She fell silent, her thoughts too scrambled to know what more to say. Buster was a dog she'd loved and cared for ever since coming to live on the farm years ago, and without warning, he had attacked her. When she'd held her hands up to ward him off, blue fire had erupted from them and consumed him as though it was a living, ravenous thing. Nothing like that had ever happened to her before, and she couldn't rightly explain what she didn't understand.

When not hard at work on his next story he hosts the popular Dead Robots' Society podcast, which is a podcast made by writers for writers.  Eris has moved again, she and her mother move...a lot. Her memory of her dad is him moving away. As she seems to be making some new friends, she innocently asks about a boy she had seen in the store. Turns out he has been missing for a month and her new friends abandon her, as one of them was his sister.
  Nelson, the boy she saw at the store turns out to be someone...a lucent...that only she can see. He has come to find her and bring her home so that she can help his kind from a deadly virus. Nelson says he knows her father and that he has told him she can help save them; it seems she has special DNA. Eris is torn, should she go? Should she stay with the only person she's really known growing up? An incident occurs as Eris is trying to decide, and off she goes with Nelson to find out more.
  This is a well written story that I loved, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. It had so much to it, but I think my overwhelming thought was this story makes me happy. Eris' journey of self-discovery in some ways echoes what so many kids go through these days. Maybe not the same circumstances, but definitely a road all teenager's face to some degree. I am interested to see where the next book will take me, this story is fascinating. I would like to thank Ms. Sniznek for giving me this book for an honest review.

Ashley's eyes widened and her voice trembled.  "There was no one around taller than Steve.  You couldn't possibly know that shirt.  He's been gone for… You only moved in two weeks ago.  You couldn't have seen it."  Her hands began to shake and she glanced around nervously.
"Sure I did," I said.  "I've seen him several times before, and he walked right by you most of the way back here," I couldn't understand why Ashley had such a reaction to my question, or description.
She shook her head fiercely in refusal and backed away from me.  I noticed the look of fear, pain, and guilt collect on her face before she turned and ran across the lot to her apartment.
"Good going Eris," the other girl said in a hushed, but obviously debasing voice.   "Matt disappeared a month before you moved here.  No one has seen him, or heard from him since,"
"Who's Matt?" I asked.
"Ashley's older brother," she said.  "He got into a fight with their parents and took off one night.  I don’t know how you found out about his shirt, but that was pretty cruel of you to do that to Ashley.  Especially after all she's done for you.  She's the one that wanted to include you in our group.  I gotta go."  She took off before I could say anything else.  The sting in this girl's voice and the look on Ashley's face stunned me into silent immobility.

Biography
I grew up in Vermont mostly and now live in Virginia with my family (those still at home).  My husband and I have a blended family of seven kids.  My childhood was spent moving around a lot. (non-military)  About five years ago, we started home-schooling our youngest children.  Now there are only two remaining in home-school.  I have tried to nurture the love of books in our children and now our grandchildren -- always nurturing their imaginations.  Recently, I have become active in our community with literacy, starting a local (and online) creative writing club and volunteer tutoring at the Adult Learning Center.

I struggle with disabilities.  So, have to be careful not to overdo things... I don't always listen to my own advice.  I have a dry, sarcastic and corny sense of humor and always try to look at things optimistically.  (again not always successful)  However, I feel that if I don't give up -- for long -- then things will work out for the best eventually.

Q)  What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating any of your books?

A)  How the story seems to magically appear before your eyes. I never really know where the story is going to go, and then I’ll be washing dishes or taking a walk and think that’s it! And start writing.

A damaged soul with severe OCD Emalyn heads off to college in the hopes she can get past the lonely to have a more normal life. With her best friend Michele to help her she starts in on her college life. Sebastian, a very nice young man whom Emalyn tries dating, tries to understand who she is...too cute. Emalyn's mysterious benefactor seems to drive her nuts more than anything else and to top it off Michele gets involved with her driver Stuart. As her days pass though, Emalyn finds that the lonely seems to be hiding more than she thought.
This book completely blew me away, Tara Brown has outdone herself! I have never read a book that could make me so uncomfortable at times, then cry and laugh. I can't begin to find the words to praise this book. I would highly recommend it to a more mature level of reader, it definitely isn't for the faint of heart or younger crowd. I would like to thank Tara Brown for giving me a copy of her book to read and review, it was a pleasure!!!

A steamy interview with Elmo!!

*I arrive late to the interview. I overslept and Elmo is waiting patiently. My is he sexy. It's hard to believe Luna wouldn't be into him…except, that's how I wrote it, so…*

Me: Hello! Sorry! Late night last night.

Elmo: It's alright. I understand.

Me: I'm sure you do, what with being friends with Cadence and all. I don't want to waste anymore of our time, so let's get started. Your friends call you Elmo. What is that short for?

Elmo: Guglielmo. It's a family name on my mother's side. She's from Spain.

Me: Spain. I've always wanted to go there. Do you speak Spanish?

*Elmo grins like he gets this a lot and knows exactly how to answer.*

Elmo: Sí, soy bastante fluido. I am fluent.

Me: And I'm impressed. My fiance would be mad if he knew I was here with you now.

Elmo: He should be.

*My eyes are wide and I know I'm blushing. THIS isn't the character I wrote…but he sure is the kind of character I like…*

Me: Oh…my. Let's not go there. We all know about your feelings for Luna. You hold a little candel for her, or maybe it's a torch. But, have you had any girlfriends?

Elmo: A few. Are you going to ask me to kiss and tell?

Me: Would you?

Elmo: Let's just say I've never left a woman disappointed, tampoco novia insatisfecha.

*I blink, but he clearly isn't going to translate. That's okay though. I'll google it later.*

Me: Right, so you're good in bed.

*I have to ask.*

Elmo: Would you like to find out?

Me: Will you talk to me in Spanish?

Elmo: Voy a hablar con usted en el idioma que desee. I'll use any language you want. Like I said, I don't dissapoint.

Me: Does Luna know? *Elmo just shrugs.* Have you ever kissed her?

Elmo: *grinning* I did once. She hit me. Closed fist.

Me: Yeah, that sounds like our Luna. Elmo, this is a side of you we don't see in the books.

Elmo: I behave myself most of the time, as I'm sure you can understand.

Me: Of course. We'll leave that for the readers to find out when they read BEAST WITHIN. Is there anything else you'd like to leave our readers with?

Elmo: I just hope they enjoy our story. As I'm sure they already know, BEAST WITHIN comes out February 25 with BEAST ANEW launching March 27.

Me: Thanks for the plug. I'm glad we got to do this and I'm surprised you're such a flirt, but I guess I shouldn't be.

Elmo: If things don't work out with your fiance, remember me, corazon.

Me: Oh wow. Should you really be tempting me? Because…well…you know. Anyway. Thanks for coming.

Elmo: No problem.

Tyffani Clark Kemp has been writing since she discovered in the sixth grade that it wasn't enough just to read about fantastic places, but she could create her own.
